My mom loved him too. So sad.

OK, of course Inez wants for absolutely nothing--not only at Christmas, but pretty much year round. She has gotten to a place in her life in the last few years where if she wants something, she can go get it, without having to check every price tag and finagle her funds for two months afterwards; a far cry from when I was a kid and all my school clothes came from the summer yard sales. I'm not complaining, mind you. Growing up dirt-poor teaches you a lot about being thankful for what you do have. There are some stand-bys for her stocking, tho. Chocolate-covered cherries (only the Cella with the clear liquid center), Belgian chocolate hazelnut truffles, house slippers (the flat ones with just the terrycloth across the top, and a dozen or so knee-high nylons are the givens each year. I used to always get her a book of some sort, but now I just buy the ones on cd because she can no longer see to read. We were on the phone the other day and she was telling me how she has been asking my brother to find her some Marie Calender frozen dinners. She lives in a podunk town and maybe that one grocery has them and maybe not. Anyway, he hasn't brought her one single dinner. Sunday evening we went to the store for a couple of things and for the life of me, I could not remember the fourth thing on the list. (too much of something...back in the day, of course). We walked round and round the super Kroger trying to remember what it was. I gave up and we turned down an isle to head to the front of the store. I no sooner got the words out of my mouth, "I guess I'll remember later" and what do you suppose someone had laid on the shelf, on top of the canned goods, 20 aisles from the frozen foods? Yep. Two frozen Marie Calender dinners. Mary and I just dropped our mouths to the floor and bolted back to the frozen foods! And they were even on sale. I think had Mary not been with me and seen for herself, I wouldn't have even told anyone; just too twilight-zoney.... Don't tell me there are no angels....and maybe even Santa himself had a hand in that one!

Neat story, Q. It made me smile. Sometimes something happens that is just a bit too much of a coincidence and you just gotta stop for a second and say, 'Wow.'

Dang, did I mess up yesterday. I waited until 6:30 pm to call Mom to wish her a happy new year. When she heard it was me, she started crying like a baby; not sniffling, but all-out boo-hooing. I asked her what was wrong--thinking it probably had something to do with my brother and what he wasn't doing.... Seems Mom forgot all about yesterday being New Years. She was thinking it was just another day, so she didn't cook. No greens, no black-eyed peas, no hog jowl--just one of her Marie Calender frozen dinners. Seems Lloyd was too sick to have an appetite anyway and Mom just did the microwave thing. She was sooo upset. I tried to explain that it wasn't a big deal and that rice was suppose to bring good luck as well (there was rice in her dinner) as greens and peas. She would not stop crying until I told her when you got to be almost 79 years old, you should be able to make up your own rules for what's good and bad...and that Lloyd might actually feel like eating today if she were to go ahead and cook those things today. She finally stopped crying. I think it was more that she forgot than the fact that she didn't have the good-luck foods. She said she just couldn't believe that she had forgotten something she had done every year her whole entire life. *sigh* It's just silly superstition, I know. To Inez, it was a full-blown tragedy to which every bad thing that happens this year will no doubt be attributed to. Stupid black-eyed peas.

Yeah, mom got p-oed because I didn't cook beans yesterday. It didn't bother me none though. I figured if I did nothing it might just create good luck for me just because I went against tradition.

Your story, Q, reminds me of that woman I mentioned whose mom sent her out to the grocery because she realized she didn't have black-eyed peas, and just couldn't have New Year's without them.
I'm not one for superstitions. LX got all upset the other day; she was reading my palm going by slim directions in a book of hers. Let's see....my life is supposed to be hard and difficult, my love line is short, my life line is shorter...but hey, I rule my destiny instead of following fate. And there ya go, I told her - none of the other things matter, because I rule my own destiny. But if you want, check my other hand; everything is the complete opposite.

I don't know how that could've been better stated, C. Thank you.
I'm not superstitious...other than the fascination with the mystery of the whole thing. But like most people my age with family all from the deep south, I am familiar with a whole lotta mo-jo.
I know I will never live another new year's day without cooking those stupid black-eyed peas and greens--if for no other reason than for Inez.

Mom is back in the hospital... with pneumonia this time. She is very weak and of course always short of breath. I was trying to hold off until the 9th, so maybe Mary can go with me, but I don't know...I may be leaving again tomorrow some time. Keep those prayers and good wishes coming; she can use them all.

A quick good morning everyone. Just got off the phone with Mom. I could actually understand what she was saying this morning so she is doing better. I know it has to be all the love and prayers spilling out of this thread... I love you guys. Gotta run for now. No road trip at this point, but we gotta hit the WM before it gets too crowded. Looks like a better day today. Be back soon.

Mom is continuing to improve...got the IV out yesterday and has begun to have a bit of an appetite. She has remembered that she can reach me at work on the 800 number, however. So now, everytime they wake her up for meds or treatments, she calls. Which is fine. I love it that I am getting to hear from her often. I must clue her into something we call "crunch-time" when she is feeling a little better! For now, you can bet I will continue to drop everything for 15 minutes just to hear her voice, no matter how busy we are! It will be there when I hang up the phone. Thanks again for all the well-wishes. You all are the best.

Great, great news!!!
And I just gotta BOLL at her calling at "crunch-time". I did this to Hubs just today. He politely listened, responded, and then came the "Uhm, Dear? It's crunch time." Oops.

Really wonderful news champ, so glad to hear it. Errrrr, what exactly is "crunch time" guys? "Crunch time" is the absolute busiest part of your work night (or work day for the "normal" people) when everything is happening and you are usually trying to beat the clock--in our case to make a plane shipment deadline for our send-out work.
