An Old Maid's Memoirs... Siren posted that at Whoosh, referring to the cold: "It's as bitter as an old maid's memoirs." What a great analogy, and certainly true today. It's below freezing! Brrrrr.

Bet ya think I'm going to say Christmas Eve, don't ya?
It is that; it's also time for me to take a trip down mammary lane: my yearly mammogram.
Though the morning of Christmas Eve is not the most opportune time to have a mammogram, there's rarely a bad time for the following reminder:
Women over 40, and those with a family history of breast cancer are advised to get yearly mammograms, in addition to monthly self-examinations - don't forget those either. "Early detection saves lives."
This has been a public ser-vise announcement. Now, excuse me while I go get squished.

Green.
La Fheile Naomh Phadraig Shona Daoibh! (Law ay-le nave faw-rig dee-iv.)
Happy St. Patrick's Day! Are you wearing green?
It's customary in the United States to wear green on St. Patrick's Day, but in Ireland, doing so may ruin any chances of having the luck of the Irish. Green has been considered an unlucky color by the Irish - folklore says green is the favorite color of faeries, who are likely to steal people, especially children, who wear too much of the color.

One more "ar" for the week: Arbor Day (going with the "a" in Earth).
Today is National Arbor Day. We'll be planting a tree this evening - a cute American Fringe tree I bought at the nursery last fall, and didn't get around to planting then. It spent the winter heeled in in the vegetable garden, and finally will find a permanent home in the back yard.
On a discouraging note - wildfires are breaking out throughout the state. I think it's amazing that with all the snow we've had this winter, and a spring with so much rain that the area can still be so dry. Our sign coming into town that has the fire danger level for the day has been reading "High" for the past week. 1,100 acres of forest in the northern Lower Peninsula burned, and a few smaller fires were controlled further south; one in the county in which I live. It rained last night, and is supposed to again tonight. I hope it's enough to prevent more fires from starting.

May Day
May Day can refer to various labour celebrations conducted on May 1 that commemorate the fight for the eight hour day. May Day in this regard is called International Workers' Day, or Labour Day. The choice of May 1st was a commemoration by the Second International for the people involved in the 1886 Haymarket affair in Chicago, Illinois. As the culmination of three days of labor unrest in the United States, the Haymarket incident was a source of outrage and admiration from people around the globe. In countries other than the United States and Canada, residents sought to make May Day an official holiday and their efforts largely succeeded.
For this reason, in most of the world today, May Day has become an international celebration of the social and economic achievements of the labour movement. Although May Day received its inspiration from the United States, the U.S. Congress designated May 1 as Loyalty Day in 1958 due to the day's appropriation by the Soviet Union. Alternatively Labor Day traditionally occurs sometime in September in the United States. Some view this as an effort to isolate American workers from the worldwide community. People often use May Day as a day for political protest, such as the million of people who demonstrated against far-right candidate Jean-Marie Le Pen in France, or as a day for protest against government actions, such as pro-immigrant rallies across the United States.

So...no one can think of one..."something" that starts with an "a" or a "p" or another "p" or a "l", or an "e"?

Touchdown!!!
Where? When? Certainly not by my favorite team, and not this college football season. ARGH! Don't even mention college football. Pfft. Have you seen what the Wolverines are doing this year? Probably not, because they aren't doing anything.....unless you count fumbling the ball, throwing interceptions, and generally tripping over themselves on the field, doing something. Oh, and losing. They are doing a lot of that.
