You know, Mary and I are toying with several ideas about what direction to go in...financially. So many burners in the "on" position right now. I'm hesitant to make any real commitments right now with things the way they are in Ga. I am back and forth so much right now--and will continue to be for who knows how long.... ...anyway... We would love to open a bar & grill-type something...small, healthy menu, lots of atmosphere and good tunes, a small venue for live music, maybe a little catering and/or dj-ing for kicks and giggles...the possibilities are endless. Hard to make a move like that though when I'm keeping the road between here and south Ga flaming hot. I could use a good on line crash course in business, oh queen of the google bots...

Besides internet searches, you can check out books on small business, cafes, etc. at the library. (I'm sure the workers there would be more than eager to help you find just the right books you need so that you don't waste time on ones you don't need.)
Also, chit-chat with owners of your favorite eateries where you eat at.
Do research on Paula Deen of Food Network. She was an agoraphobic and started selling bag lunches from her home. She made them up and sent her two sons out to sell them in town. She called her business "The Bag Lady." She'd make a good role model to start with. [Paula's Food Network Bio] - [Paula's Website Bio]
Google Search URLs don't work very well on proboards, so I'm just gonna post things to google, and if I find sites that seem like they might be what you're looking for, I'll add them as I find them:
Google Searches:
Paula Deen Business+Starting up a cafe Articles+Business+Starting up a cafe How To Start Up A Cafe How To Open A Cafe Articles+Business+Planning A Cafe Planning A Cafe Articles+Business Planning+Opening A Cafe Starting A Business How To Start A Business
Just a thought of things to add if things go well, or at the start: internet service (computers optional - as in: 'customers bring their own'); reading areas; . . .
I got a late start so I'll continue this later today.

Thank you, Jox, for all your time. My head is spinning. I want to make the investment, make all the decisions, do all the work...and have someone else handle the books. Not a very good plan. I have no doubts about my abilities to make it work, but I have frightfully little business experience. It can be very overwhelming when you try to start the wheels moving forward...

If Mary is better at bookkeeping and she enjoys the business side, why not let her do that for you?
You could also work for a cafe you like and learn the ropes of running a business from the owner/managers. That might help with the itch until you have everything all worked out. Then again, you can figure up how much you can stand to lose without going under and just jump in. But you'd probably have a better chance with the business if you hold off until you've learned all there is to learn and then start off gradual.
